Prayer beads

B74E5379-3303-4852-AEA2-A5BB7EC1CE9C

Prayer beads

Made of warm brown wood

The tassel, a fiery red

Lie in front of me on my footstool

Prayer beads

Take me back to Iran

The country I come from

Held in the hands of a holy one in a photograph

Held in the hands of the merchant at the bazaar as he sells his wares

Held in the hand of the Sufi sage as he moves the beads with his fingers like he has done a thousand times

Prayer beads

Come in all colors and forms

Made of wood or glass or stone

Prayer beads

Are sacred to me

They connect us to our creator

At the mall

7624CB7D-848C-462E-BB7F-B5EB8D0C69AB.jpeg

Sitting in the modern bazaar, the mall

Looking at all sorts of people walking by

A black guy with braided hair with his headphones on

A twenty something girl with purple hair

A guy with a very long beard

A girl looking at her phone as she walks

Sales signs everywhere to entice the shoppers

Chocolate boxes in the shape of hearts for the upcoming valentine

A man carrying a suit he just bought

Someone next to me talking on her phone about her flight

Someone walking with scarf, hat and mittens on

Maybe she just came inside

And me sitting comfortably on a bench with my notebook

Each person I see has their own story

The guy with the long beard may be grieving a loss

  1. The girl with purple hair may have just got some good news

The man carrying the suit may be going to a friend’s wedding

The person who is smiling may actually be sad inside

Friends talking

Maybe giving each other advice

Shiny new merchandise everywhere

Salespeople who are eager to sell

And in the middle of this material world

We are the carriers of our souls

Sensitive souls that need to be loved

We each have our own story

Some of it written, some unknown

Broken dreams

IMG_7681

Shards of broken glass

Showing us a violent outburst

            An angry response

A desperate plea to be seen

Even though the mirror has been shattered

Shards of broken glass

            A sad sight

            Beauty destroyed

            Reflections stolen

            Light darkened

And we can’t put the pieces back together

We can’t return to the past

The deed has been done

A scream let out

Broken dreams

Lay among the shards of glass

Friendship

248F3A56-B163-41C5-B359-3164FCDE4D19

Friendships can be so complicated

Actually human relationships are complicated

Why I wonder to myself

Why is that?

Sometimes our ego gets in the way

Sometimes we misunderstand

Sometimes our feelings get hurt

Sometimes we expect too much

Sometimes when one person has a challenge in life

We take it as them being distant

Sometimes you need to give and not worry too much

About getting back

Sometimes you have to trust that the friendship is still alive

Even though the signs may not point to that

Sometimes we need to just reach out

Our friendship needs to be watered like a plant

But the work of friendship is worth it in the end

Because friendship is the best gift one can give

And get back

Early mornings

img_4219

I love the early mornings

The day is new and inviting

I’ve slept and I’m rested

It’s quiet and peaceful

I have time to read and think

As my mind gradually awakens

I feel at peace

This is my time with the universe

Time to contemplate and

Remember my dreams

The early mornings

My favorite time

My thoughts are uncluttered

And I’m ready for a fresh start

My notebooks

IMG_6463

Days go by

Seasons change

And I write in my notebooks

Children grow up

Life changes

And I keep writing in my notebooks

Dreams are dreamt

Some become reality

And I keep writing in my notebooks

We move from city to city

From one country to another

And I keep writing in my notebooks

My notebooks have created a beautiful pile

Colourful and different each one

Writing is the constant in my life

My notebooks are the repository of my thoughts

Happiness

4ED57821-2ADE-498B-BDE1-0E94EDBCDB58

What brings us happiness?

Certainly not just material things

Because there are many unhappy rich people

To be happy we have other need that need the be met

Need for companionship and friendship

Need for purpose in our lives

A passion or an interest

And ironically happiness comes to us

When we make others happy

It’s not just about us

We derive happiness from helping others

And being useful in society

In a way our happiness depends on the happiness of our neighbor

Calm

pexels-photo-518485.jpeg

Calm like the stillness of the lake

Calm like the quiet of the night

Calm like green grass of the meadow

Calm like the early morning breeze

Calm like the serenity prayer

Calm like a baby sleeping

Calm like the murmur of water

Calm like a soul at peace

Morning pages

3717CB9F-7EED-4738-AAB9-2219DFF94BCEMorning pages
Write what you want
Empty your cup
Let your mind roam around and explore
There is no particular goal
Write about what has been
Write about what’s to come
Write about your hope and dreams
Just write
We all need to express ourselves
We need to be listened to
Your pages are your companion
Always ready to listen to you
Morning pages
Write what you want
Empty your cup
This is your gift to you

Spirit

4ED57821-2ADE-498B-BDE1-0E94EDBCDB58

A smile is a smile
No matter our race or class or nationality
Tears are tears
No matter where we are from

Laughter is exhilarating
No matter who is laughing
Heartache is painful
No matter the colour our skin

Hope gives us wings
No matter where we were born

Despair makes our days
Cloudy and dark
No matter how rich or poor we are

Kindness and a loving heart
Don’t depend on what we look like

Patience and humility
Come from inside us

Our essence
Our qualities
How we make others feel
And how we feel, emanate from and are felt by the spirit inside us
