The magic of the early mornings

image

The silence of the early morning

When the world is still sleeping

When the sun has not risen

When my mind is refreshed after a night of rest

When the day ahead awaits

All I hear is the tick tock of the clock in the living room

And the hum of the heater

And that’s if I listen for it

Otherwise, I’m lost in my thoughts

On a sea of tranquility

No one to distract me

No one who needs me

No urgent feeling to do things

Other than contemplate, read and write

It’s the magic of the early morning

Is my spirit closer to its source?

Is my mind not clouded with the tasks of the day?

What is the source of this calm I feel?

My sanity!

One hour a day, I treat myself
I treat myself to a cup of coffee
In a sunny coffee shop (when the sun it out)
I treat myself to
Reading what I want
Writing what I want
Contemplating life…

I treat myself because
The rest of day
I think of my family and their needs
I think of my students and their needs
I take care of my responsibilities and my to-do list

And because I treat myself one hour a day
I’m a happier person the rest of the day!

Being selfless is good I’m sure
And I am selfless some of the day
But I need my hour that’s for me
In order to function optimally!

Giving and being there for others
Is a noble thing
But so is taking care of my sanity!

Play time!

Play time is necessary for creativity to thrive!
And what’s play time?
Time spent on things we want to do
Rather than things we should do!

Things that bring us pleasure
Make us laugh
Make us relax!

A walk in the park
Reading a good book
Having a cup of coffee with a friend
Some art activity we enjoy
A day at the spa
Or going for a massage
Playing cards

This kind of down-time
Energizing time
Time to nurture our inner child
Time to have fun
Time to do what we want
Is necessary if we want to produce
And be useful and helpful to others
The rest of the time

We need to recharge our batteries
In order to function well
And recharging our batteries involves
Doing activities that bring us joy and delight!

A few of my favorite things

A few of my favorite things

What makes me happy are simple things
Reading, writing, talking to friends
Laughing and being silly sometimes

Walks with Albert
Hugs from my kids
Early mornings
Sitting in the sun

Learning new things
Meeting new people
Traveling
Nature walks

Flowers
Beautiful things and
Art!

Tidiness is overrated!

What do the back seat of my car
My bedside table
My reading spot at home
And my coffee table
Have in common?

They’re strewn with books
And when I think of putting them away
I realize that that’s how I like them

My books are my companions
I read a few at a time
One at bedtime
One with my morning coffee
And one when I have extra time!

I don’t want to put them away
Because they grow on me
I like seeing them lying around
They’re like my recent history

Their beautiful jacket designs
Remind me of what I read
How I felt as I read the book
And of my friend
If they were given to me by a friend

Gradually, they become
A part of the furniture for me
How can I remove them?
They are also a part of me!
