Chit chat

IMG_1652

Chit chat

But interesting chit chat

Consequential chit chat

Stimulating chit chat

We talk about art

We talk about books

We talk about projects

We talk about what’s going on in our lives

We talk about the deeper questions we have

We share with each other our goals

Our dreams

Our concerns

We share with each other

Our present, future and past

Lively conversations

Ones which leave me heard and understood

Ones that guide me and help me develop my plans

These are the kind of conversations

I have with my dear friend, Elaheh

They are not just any kind of chit chat

The art of knowing

IMG_4311

“The art of knowing is knowing what to ignore”

-Rumi

Life is full of beauty

But there is also ugliness

Life is full of kindness

But there is also enmity

Life is full of joy

But there is also anger

What we focus on

Becomes our reality

What we ignore

Has no power over us

I choose to focus on love

And ignore hatred

I choose to fill my mind and heart

With beautiful sentiments

Why do we want to got to Mars?

Aren’t there enough interesting places on Earth?

Have we explored everywhere?

Yes, we’ve been to the top of the tallest mountains

We’ve been to the depths of the oceans

We’ve been to the Arctic and deserts vast

Why are we not content with that?

We have this need to explore the unknown

We have the desire to push the limits further

We like to do what has not done before

This is what separates us from animals

Who are content with the status quo

So, we’ll make it to Mars one day

Like we have made it to the moon

This challenge will be met too

With creativity, the advancement of technology

And experiences of the past

This goal with be met one day, I’m sure

Unconventional

Sometimes I think about my life

I realize it hasn’t followed the usual path we expect

I got married while I was a student

To another student

I married outside my culture

At a time when it was not so common

I knew how to drive before my husband did

I changed my major many times

I chose to stay at home to raise my kids

At a time when most women worked outside the house

I moved from city to city several times

And when I went back to work

I only worked part time

I started writing poetry later in life

In a language that is not my mother tongue

I chose to write about mental health

We need to get rid of the stigma

Now, I’ve entered a new phase of life

With more emphasis on writing

It’s a transition of sorts

I’m still trying to figure it out

All of these things make me a little different

Some things I’ve done are unconventional

But I’ve been lucky to have been able to choose my own path

And let the spirit be my guide
