Today’s news

purple flower

Our world seems like a very dark place at times

Injustice prevails

Rights are trampled on

People are silenced

The fear of the other persists

It saddens the heart to read the news

Greed, abuse of power and crime the topics we see

Sometimes sprinkled in there is a little good news

But mostly bad news is what we hear

How can we deal with this darkness?

How can we keep hope alive?

Individually, I think

All we can do is to contribute to the light

Do acts of kindness without being asked

Encourage those around us

Take part in positive projects and

Raise children who will do the same

We can’t eliminate darkness

But we stay optimistic and work towards better times

Injustice

04A016AC-3DA2-496F-A6D5-298C4DFDFCC3.jpeg

What is the color of injustice?

It’s midnight black

And like the darkness of the moonless night

It wraps itself around you and starts squeezing

Injustice like a black cloth blindfolds you

And wrapped around your mouth, silences you

Injustice like a rope

Ties your hands behind your back and restricts you

Injustice is the thief that steals the light

Temporarily

But the darkness of injustice

Will give way to dawn

That day will come

Silenced

img_5386When you stop people from talking

When you close the schools down

When people can’t go to work

And the nation comes to a stop

There is something that’s not right

Something that can’t be explained away

In this age of communication

There is something wrong if you don’t let

people communicate

The seeming peace is a mirage

The embers are burning under the logs

Fire can still erupt from those embers

If the conditions are right

It’s not silence when you cover someone’s mouth

It’s not freedom if you don’t let people talk

Thinking of the people of Iran

Fall carpet

DB1D173B-2DAE-42DC-AF61-9054E7E5DEF6.jpegThe trees have spread their fall carpet under them

They are inviting us to sit with them for a while

Look at the beauty of nature and

The amazing colors, a feast for the eyes

They say let’s look back at the summer

What did you enjoy?

What was hard?

They say let’s look ahead to winter

The season of hibernation

We can still do a lot in those cold months

They say let’s think about right now

The blessings we have

How far we’ve come And then they thank us for visiting them

And staying for a while

Early mornings

17A5AB05-CE4B-4DBC-9300-BBD0F1468C41

It’s early in the morning

It’s pitch black outside

The rest of the household is sleeping

But I’m wide awake

I pick up my phone

To see what my friends are up to

Their days have already started

They are awake

I talk to my friends in Europe

I talk to my friends in Iran

We talk about history

We talk about art

In this part of the world

My friends are still sleeping

But with the magic of technology

I’m in conversation with those who are not

The mysterious smile

09E8D9DC-9884-406D-AC93-82ED1EF161DB.jpeg

Have you seen someone looking at their phone and smiling

It’s an odd image in a way

The phone can’t be funny, you realize

In reality that person’s attention is somewhere else

Communicating with a friend who can be miles away

You feel a little left out

They smile again and you wonder why

This is the age when distant places come close by

We can communicate with anybody anywhere

So the person on the phone could be smiling

At something their friend in Australia said

Or seeing a picture of their grand child

Taken that day

The festival

IMG_7201

It is the season of fall

When the trees put on their colorful garb

Ready for the festival that arrives once a year

Orange, yellow, red and auburn

Magenta, purple and brown

The colors we see

Evidences of summer are still there

But we can also see the season changing

The Ache

The ache you feel in your heart

When you leave loved ones

The ache you can’t control, cannot stop

The ache that consumes you

Holds you in a tight grip

The ache that brings tears to your eyes

I felt this ache today

And there was not much I could do

Except accepting it for it was

The ache subsided eventually

It would have been hard to tolerate it for too long

But it may return from time to time

Can’t totally banish it from my heart

Waves

beach during sunset

Emotions like waves come to the shore

With noise and fury that lessons gradually

Until they arrive at the shore line and there is a semblance of calm

Before another wave comes

And so on

I feel these waves intensely

They bring me joy and

They bring me heartache

Sometimes the heartaches catch me by surprise

The rush of the wave is unexpected

But calm return eventually

And these waves of emotions

Continue to come to shore

As long as we love

And as long as we live

Courage

248F3A56-B163-41C5-B359-3164FCDE4D19

Courage comes in many forms

Courage to endure

Courage to stand for one’s principles

Courage to stand out

Courage to be an agent of change

Courage to explore and try something new

Courage to be vulnerable

Courage is telling the truth when it’s not convenient
