The Ache

The ache you feel in your heart

When you leave loved ones

The ache you can’t control, cannot stop

The ache that consumes you

Holds you in a tight grip

The ache that brings tears to your eyes

I felt this ache today

And there was not much I could do

Except accepting it for it was

The ache subsided eventually

It would have been hard to tolerate it for too long

But it may return from time to time

Can’t totally banish it from my heart

Separation

IMG_1005

“Separation brings with it burning grief”

The loss of a loved one

A friend moving away

One’s children moving out

These things can cause us immense sadness

This is the way of our world

This is how we see things

If we think of physical separation

In the world of the spirit, though

We are close

We never leave one another

I will focus on our spiritual reality

When I feel sad about the loss of a friend

Or their moving away

We are always close in spirit

Separation has no meaning

What is love?

image

What does love mean
After the initial giggles and butterflies?

What does love mean
Besides a huge emotional upheaval
That changes one’s life?

What does love mean
Besides the pain of separation
And joy of reunion?

What does love mean
Besides laughter and happy times?

It means I’ll love you despite your shortcomings
Because I have those too

It means I’ll hold you when you cry
Because that time will come

It means I’ll walk along side you on the stony path
Life is full of those

It means I’ll catch you when you fall
Because you might

It means I’ll sometimes put you before myself
That I won’t get my way each time

It means I’ll problem solve and compromise
That I’ll be your companion for life

Love means I’ll work on our relationship each day
Because love needs nourishment

Love means we will walk this path together
Hand in hand, side by side

Stones

We live more isolated
More orderly lives
Various things separating us
From one another

Bigger homes
Longer distances to work
Less time for family and friends
Valuing independence
Fear of rejection
Old wounds of the past

The distances created between us
Make our communities feel colder
More organized perhaps
Less chaotic
But Loneliness is rampant

Instead of talking to friends
We call hot-lines designed
To help us cope

When we need help
We are weary of asking our
Neighbour for a hand

When we stand in line
We look down at our phones
Instead of at each other

Separation is cold, lonely and lifeless

Being more connected may be
More chaotic
Louder
Less comfortable at times

But it’s colourful
More lively
More cozy
More kind

And a helping hand is always nearby

Separation cooks…

“Separation cooks”
And this is the cooking that transforms raw ingredients
Into a delicious stew
Fire and heat bind the pieces together
To create a beautiful whole

Heat is not comfortable
It is not desirable
But it’s necessary to achieve the goal

One has to burn in the fire of trials to attain wisdom

And separation is a trial
It’s not comfortable
It’s not desirable
The fire of separation burns the heart
And consumes the soul
But what is the result?
Wisdom, forbearance, steadfastness, patience
And a more mature love!

Deep love

The pain of separation
One I’ve felt before
It tears at one’s heart
But one feels alive

The pain can be pushed away
or buried away
But gone will be the feeling
Of being alive

This pain is not to be avoided, but endured
This pain is the proof of a deep love
