Because

27851F95-CD9C-4FF9-91DC-B492BCDC115B

Days go by

And others join the cry of freedom

Even high school students are tired

Of being dictated to

They have arisen to demand their rights

The song of ‘baraye’ is being song everywhere

It has become an anthem of unity

For dancing in the street

For basic human rights

Because of being tired of covering their hair

For man, country, rebuilding

For woman, life and liberty

Because the status quo won’t do

Because of justice, long overdue

Because minorities have rights too

Because they’re tired of disunity

Because of the power of this song

Because of the strength of unity

The dawn is near and they know it

And the sun will shine eventually

Woman

0F1F10E0-B1F3-4C16-ABA9-C50BF902154F

Woman, life, freedom

Zan, zendegi, azadi

The cry of not only women

But also men who support them

Because lifting up women

Will lift up society, which includes men

Women are centre stage

Women lead

And when women lead

Things are bound to change

Their passion, their conviction

The wrongs they have suffered

Have fanned the flames

Flames that are spreading like wild fire

And burning the structures that have

Tried to keep them in their place

Only my pen

90184883-4549-4670-97CF-5E648A7BE771
You are on the streets

Demanding your rights

Demonstrating for equality

Jeopardizing your life

I only have my pen

And with my pen

I will sing your praises

I will applaud your courage

I will celebrate valour

You are heroines raising your voices

Voices that are being heard around the world

You are sacrificing your safety

Risking arrest and imprisonment

Even death

I only have my pen

And with my pen

I will ask others to pay attention to your cause

To demand justice and cry out your names

In great assemblies

So we can honor the memory of all the Mahsa Aminis of Iran

I only have my pen

Freedom fighters

97030614-D94D-4EE7-B422-CE8742DE16D4

My brain needs a break

From the bad news, the good news

All the emotions that they evoke

All the expectations and hopes

But they don’t get a break

They are in the streets everyday

They are sending their videos every night

They cannot afford to rest or take a break

The work of a freedom fighter is not for the faint of heart

They sacrifice, they get injured, they get arrested

They raise their voices for change

I can take a break here from the news

When it becomes overwhelming

But they can’t

My hat is off to them

Sun of Justice

1CAEFE9A-51E3-4185-A48D-3F9E0A419B6B

The difference is conviction

The difference is ardour and being on the side of justice

The difference is they are not obeying anyone

This is their fight

They are the soldiers and the generals

A fire has been lit for freedom

Its flames are growing everyday

The winds of opposition only cause it to spread

You can’t control a wildfire

The energy of youth

Youth who are tired of lies

Youth who know their rights are being trampled on

Youth who feel they have nothing to lose

This energy feeds the fire

Injustice can prevail for a while

It can maintain its strong grip on power for some time

But those who are tired of corruption and empty promises

Those who long for freedom and equality

They can only be suppressed so long

The night of oppression is dark

But we can see the glimpses of the dawn

A dawn that will come because of the sacrifices being made

A dawn that will have its price

But soon will the sun of justice shine

The point of no return

04751D06-DDEC-437F-B718-BC856D971869

I see people persisting and persevering

I hear their cries

Asking for freedom

Asking for equality

Asking for justice

I see people paying a price

With bullets in their bodies

With their bruises and injuries

With being intimidated and arrested

I see people’s bravery

Women removing their headscarves

The symbol of subservience

When not their choice

Men standing with women

Boys and girls arising

I see Iranians outside Iran

Supporting their bothers and sisters

Worrying for their safely

Admiring their courage

Praying for their well being

I wonder how long those in Iran have to

Put their lives on the line?

When will other compatriots join them and support them?

When will government agents stop hitting

And  sometimes killing their own people?

Their own brothers and sisters?

Their own compatriots?

When will this talisman break?

When will this darkness give way to light?

When will the people’s wishes for justice materialize?

The future is bright

But the path is to freedom

Is paved with blood and sacrifice and

Unity is the hallmark of victory

We are reaching a point of no return

Can this nightmare be coming to an end?

For the brave women and men of Iran

Wolves

0B52F4EC-FEB3-4A39-A108-4EDE4F1109AC

Wolves in sheep’s clothing

Serenely spearing utter falsehoods

Wolves in sheep’s clothing

Attacking innocent people

Wolves in sheep’s clothing

People’s eyes have been opened

And they see through your disguise

Wolves in sheep’s clothing

Your days are now numbered

For the freedom fighters of Iran

Tears of sorrow

EF60F103-C125-4910-ACD3-7167727A64A0

Tears run down the cheeks of the world

Her brow is knotted with anguish

Another injustice

This time against a young woman who was innocent

Why did she have to die?

How long will these tribulations last?

When will equality and justice return?

When will the pain that is felt be alleviated?

When will joy return?

I think the road ahead is long

Change doesn’t happen over night

But we must keep our hopes up

We must march on despite the trials

We must focus on the good that is happening

Work for the betterment of our community

Collaborate with like minded people

And stay steadfast until freedom is achieved

Remembering Mahsa Amini

21 days

5FA0F638-6F6B-4A9E-8BD8-79851DF99472

His last time on WhatsApp was

2022-07-30, 4:15 pm Montreal time

21 days have gone by and his fate is not clear yet

His family knows little of what’s going on

His friends worry for him daily

How will the authorities collect

Evidence of espionage when there is none?

Another arrest!

Was ten years in prison not enough?

And for crimes he did not commit?

For loving humanity?

For serving his community?

I talked to him the day before he was arrested

He was well

He was thankful

He was jovial as usual

We pray for him

For fortitude and strength

Qualities he has in abundance already

I know he welcomes this sacrifice

As he did the previous ones

I know he is grateful to stand up

For what he believes in

I know he is victorious

Whether in captivity or freedom

For my dear friend, Afif Naimi

Freedom to choose

IMG_3847

Why does mandatory head covering bother me so?

It’s because it’s something that is dictated by men to women

Why should men be able to control what women do and what they wear?

Why can they set the rules?

Optional head covering when it’s a woman’s choice I have no issues with

It’s when it’s being forced that it bothers me

Even if this were a religious mandate

There should be freedom of choice to follow it

And what about those from other religions?

Hair is the adornment of women and men’s heads

Beauty is something to be celebrated

This idea of being aroused by women’s hair their body shape

No longer flies today

We live in a world that has changed

Ideas have changed

And trying to enforce old ways will not be easily tolerated

Women will fight against it

Women will prevail

It would be great if men did their share

To ensure the freedom of choice for women as well
