New reality

What are the tools of living in an
Interdependent world
Where diverse cultures and languages
and customs come together
And must co-exist?

We can’t go back in time
Or use the tools that worked in the past
Competition, looking out only for one’s own interests
Emphasis on material things and
Feeling superior to others
Won’t work
This is an interdependent world

Debating does not work
Listening and an open mind will
Competition won’t work
Cooperation will
Rigid thoughts and ideas won’t work
Flexibility will
Living isolated lives won’t work
Mixing and mingling will

The concept of “a leader”
As the one in control won’t work
The leader as servant will
Wanting all the power won’t work
Sharing it, however, will

Seeing and sowing division won’t work
Looking for similarities will
Patriarchy won’t work
Celebrating the feminine will

We live in a new reality
We need a new vision too
A vision in which we see our fellow man
As our brother and sister
Not the other
Not inferior

In this reality
The pain of someone else
Is our pain too
The misfortune of another nation
Ours as well

In this reality
Women and men must work
Side by side
cooperation is needed
Listening is important
Compassion is necessary
Truth is paramount
And service a must

The world has changed and
So must we!

Changing times

We can play it safe and follow the status quo
Or we can live based on principle and stand out

The courage to question the norm
When the norm seems unfair
The courage to stand for friendship and justice
The courage to defend a fellow man or woman
This kind of courage is admirable anywhere

What’s unfair is unfair
No matter how much the truth is twisted and turned
In the age of instant communication
It’s harder to convince people of whatever one wants
Those old ways don’t work anymore
Soon, what’s been hidden will come to fore

May we have the courage to stand
For what’s true and fair
May we break our silence when we see injustice

There was a time propaganda would work
But now everyone is looking for proof

To all those who stand for truth
I salute you, I honour you!

Points of light

The night is darkest before the dawn they say
Darkness is evident in the world today
Killing in the name of God has become common place
What God intended was love not this!

Children suffer and die from hunger
As we throw away mountains of food
Girl children are deprived of education
Who makes these rules?

Darkness rears its ugly head too often these days
But hope and love can’t be eliminated by darkness
The atrocities we see
The selfishness and hunger after power that perpetrates them
They sadden our hearts, but can’t demoralize us

Goodness and love
Compassion and kindness
Justice and mercy will prevail

There is a lot of gloom in the world
But there are points of light as well

Neighbours helping neighbours
People opening their homes to strangers
Out of love
Millions of people volunteering their time
Trying to make a difference in someone’s life

These points of light are our hope
Light will conquer darkness in the long run

The final analysis

Sometimes emotions are so overwhelming
I don’t know what to feel
Should I be sad?
Should I be shocked?
Should I be astonished?

We put our faith in our fellow man
But so many times someone betrays that trust
And shatters the image we had built in our head

Then we have to readjust our understanding of reality
Perhaps we become jaded
Perhaps we become angry and frustrated
Perhaps we question the existence of justice and hope

But this state is not a healthy one
Hope is essential
Trust is essential
Faith that goodness exists is essential

Of course the hurt feelings will stay for a while
After all, we are not machines

All we can do is stay positive
Surround ourselves with good friends
And keep doing things that are worthwhile

Everything else is bound to work out
Because there is justice in the world
And even though some people try their best
To obliterate it, they won’t succeed

Justice will prevail
And light will overcome darkness
In the final analysis!

Fleeting!

The heat and humidity of summer is here
And air-conditioning provides a much needed respite
No, I’m not complaining about the heat or the sun
I love both in measured amounts

But as most things in this world
There is no middle ground
The weather is either bone chilling cold and depressingly grey
Or humid and scorchingly hot

Sometimes I wonder why we don’t have more places in the world
With moderate climes
But I think that’s asking for too much

In this material world
Where comfort can be short lived
Riches can disappear over night
Freedom can be snuffed out with a stroke of a pen
And justice easily buried under the ground

In this world,
Freedom, justice, and equality is much more desirable
Than a moderate clime

In our world ease does not last too long
Tears replace laughter after a while
Disappointment is around the corner and
Our plans fall apart all the time

Where is one to find inner peace
How are we to reconcile all this?

It helps if our focus is not on ourselves
It helps if we are other oriented
It helps if we take the long view
It helps if we set ourselves lofty goals
It helps if we learn to be content
It helps if we see the wisdom in suffering and pain

It helps if we see this world
For the fleeting moment that it is
And on the other side of it, eternity!

So, welcome summer heat
I’ll make the most of you
Because fall is around the corner
And winter will be here soon!

How much, and of what?

How much sugar?
How much fat?
and what kind of fat
Should I eat?
All fats are not created the same
The good ones we must have
The bad ones will kill us slowly

Detoxifying is the rage
Watermelon fast
Juice fast and the rest

Must eat whole-grain wheat
And brown rice
Quinoa is even better
Protein is a must!
But not the fatty protein of red meat
Or chicken or veal
Must go for nuts, eggs, legumes, or tuna
In each meal

Must drink lots of water
Even when we don’t feel like it
Hydration is essential
It helps us think more clearly!

And juice is a no-no
All that sugar is bad
It’s empty calories
And too many calories are bad

We now have the cure-all of the day
It’s quinoa one day
Flax seed the other day
Vitamin D, the third

Too much fat on the belly
Not good for your heart
Exercise a necessity
If optimum health you want

Now don’t get me wrong
I like all that advice
Who doesn’t wan to look good
And live healthy and long?
But with all this attention
We give our bodies
I just hope we won’t forget
The rest of us

Our mind, our heart, and our soul
Need attention too
A soul-diet high on generosity and justice
A heart-diet with lots of love and kindness
And a mind-diet of focusing only on the good and positive
That would also help us feel good and feel fit!
