Ephemeral

I try to capture the beauty of nature
Because it’s ephemeral
It will be gone soon

I have to keep a record of it
Share it with my friends
And savour the beauty until it lasts

Joy is similar
It comes with gifts and cheers us up
But I know this feeling is temporary
It’s inevitably followed by sadness or
Contemplation of the serious issues facing us

Sadness is similar
It doesn’t last
But somehow during the sad times
It’s no consolation to know that it will pass
The pain is real, the sorrow is real
And that is my reality then

I try to console myself and remind myself
This too shall pass
Yet, the shadow that the sorrow has cast
Remains, and I have to deal with it

We wouldn’t call it sadness if we were able to
Transform it into joy with our thoughts
Yet there are people who deal with difficult
Situations better
And that deserves admiration and respect

Theses are people I look up to
From them, I try to learn
The secret of remaining thankful
During difficult times

Such people have a different understanding of life
Their vision sees into the future
They don’t equate discomfort and challenges
With sorrow and pain
They find a way through the pain

Their circumstances don’t change
But their perception of the situation
Allows them to rise above it
See it in a different way
See the end in the beginning
And the beginning in the end

Tidying up

Papers, papers everywhere
Some on the couch, some on the floor
Some on the table in front of me
Some in the dining room

Keep, recycle, file
Recycle, file, consolidate
Then, find proper places for them

Faded files
Empty files
Files that can be gotten rid of
Files that have grown thick over the years
With papers going back more than ten years
Paper clips
Old binders
And oh, the note book I thought I had lost!

This kind of work needs concentration
The right mood
And perhaps certain stars need to align
That’s why I don’t do it often
I like to blame it on the stars!

And once you start in one area
You end up in another one and another one
Tidying up things
You were not even going to touch

After a couple of hours
My brain feels on fire
And my eyes feel like they are crossed
I decide it’s time to stop

This is not one day’s work
But I’ve made a good start
And will I be cooking tonight?
I think not!

Easier said than done

Emotional upheavals come our way
There is no way to avoid them
Then we have to put long term serenity
Over short term happiness

This is a difficult proposition
Status quo and temporary joy
Have great allure

The human spirit has to rise to the occasion
Flex its muscles
And accept the pain

Of course, all of this is easier
Said than done

Serenity

What brings us joy and serenity
Is a sense of purpose and meaning
Waves of happiness and sadness come and go
But underneath, the ocean is calm

Pleasure is like bursts of bright light
Serenity a soft light that always shines

Our response is what gives a situation meaning
A positive response to a harsh situation
Comes from wisdom

The long view

One must learn to live with uncertainty
Some problems take months or years to resolve
If one is not comfortable with uncertainty
Those months and years will seem so long

One must find peace in a chaotic world
One must find some joy in sorrow
Life is full of ups and downs
Joy and sorrow come and go

Patience, perseverance, reliance on God
These are good provisions for our journey
And it’s good to remember that
When one problem is solved
There sits in wait, another one…

Waiting for happiness…

If you’re not happy now
You won’t be happy
After getting where you want to get
Having what you want to have
Being what you want to be

So often we think
When I have finished my studies…
When I’m married…
When my kids are in school…
When I’ve published my first book…

We think our happiness depends on
Those mile posts
That somehow crossing the finish line
Will change something in us
Will bring us joy and happiness
Will be essential to us feeling fulfilled

But joy comes from contentment
From peace of mind
From believing in something greater than us
From setting lofty goals
From not being self-centered
From reaching out to others
In their time of need

And none of this is dependent on where
We are in our lives
And what mile posts we have crossed
We need to have goals
But we can be happy at any point in our lives

encouragement

When someone encourages me
I feel like a flower in the sun
I want to stretch my petals
As much as I can

When someone encourages me
My heart smiles
My eyes sparkle
I feel exuberant!

When someone encourages me
The world seems like a kinder place
I feel surrounded by love and care

When someone encourages me
I want to say thank you, my friend
For brightening my day

Building roads on clouds

Generally I like the blue sky
With lots of sun to warm my body and soul
But clouds do come and rain is necessary
To sustain life
Rain also brings the rainbow out

What if instead of sadness at the sight of clouds
I build roads on them and use those roads to
Get to most interesting places

They say if life gives you lemon, make lemonade
So, if life brings gray rainclouds I’ll build roads on them
Roads built from lessons learned
And wisdom gathered so far

And when the sky rains tears of sorrow
I’ll climb the raindrops until I reach the top
Of the clouds and take a look around
Beyond the clouds, there is only sun
The hard work is the climb

But life has provided me with some training
In climbing and building roads so far…
Instead if allowing clouds to bring me down
I’ll climb the rain, and look beyond the clouds
Then build roads and carry on…

Finding the sacred in us…

Can a place draw you closer to your
Authentic self…
To the sacred within you?

Can a place move you so that you forget
What was pre-occupying you?
Replacing it with feelings of thankfulness
And serenity?

Can a place have the fragrance of love?
Even the air you breath, different from
Other places?

Can a place lift you up to the heights of ecstasy
And bring you to the shore of joy?

Can a place draw you to itself as if
A force was attracting you?

Can a place inspire you to write
To record your thoughts and feelings?

Yes, such places do exist
And when I find one I keep going back
To fill my cup!

Miss Emily

Miss Emily,
You chose your own society
Perhaps your soul, so fragile
Needed to be protected from
people who may hurt you unintentionally

Miss Emily,
You wrote about immortality
A subject close to my heart!
In this world of ours
Joy and sorrow coexist
Joy does not last very long
The world of spirit is a more sane one

Solitude was your choice
Your freedom
The birth place of your poems and ideas

Mysterious Miss Emily
You kept everyone guessing
Why this seclusion, they thought…

But if this seclusion made you happy
And was the crucible of your poems
Who are we to question it now…
