Let me explain 

I have been published 

Not once, but eight times

Look on Amazon

You will find my books

Publishing is no longer done the traditional way

Yes, that still exists

But now we have many more additional ways

You can be published on Instagram 

You can be published on Facebook

You can be published on WhatsApp 

And the list goes on

Will thousands read my posts?

Maybe not

Will I make money?

Who needs money anyway

Artists are mostly poor in material things

But their heart is connected to a source

Where inspiration comes from

Their words and images are worth so much to those who appreciate them

I have been published

Many times over

My readers are few 

You can’t find my books in a bookstore 

But I’m happy to reach those that I do

Art is there to uplift our souls

And artists are happy to play their role

why I write

When I feel something is not right 

When I miss my smile 

When things don’t seem exciting 

When there is a yearning in my heart

I draw or I write 

When I miss the sunshine 

Because it’s been raining all day 

When I need a pick me up

Any time of day

I draw or I write 

When I draw or write

I’m in another world

My focus is on the paper

And the thoughts in my head

It’s a magical time 

And when the poem is done 

When the drawing is finished 

I feel uplifted and I want to smile 

What is this magic? 

The act of creation?

Why does it cheer me up? 

Isn’t creating beauty therapeutic after all?

I don’t know the answers to these questions

And that’s fine 

All I know is that I will be writing and drawing

For the rest of my life

When describing art and creativity 

These words come to mind

The unseen world, spirituality, mediation

Openness to the universe, observation

So art and creativity are spiritual things

They reveal what is in another realm

In a beautiful story, poem or painting

The world of spirit is fascinating

But so much of it is unknown to us

What is the interplay between the spiritual and the physical?

How can we describe the spiritual realm?

These questions may not have answers now

But that’s how creativity manifests itself

The muse, inspiration, dreams, flashes of ideas

Help us create 

We need to be an open channel 

And let things emerge

Tangled in my zentangles

And there is no way out 

It’s an obsession

It’s hard to stop

So much variety

So many possibilities 

All leading to beauty

Unexpected, a surprise

If I write poems

I try to write everyday

If I make collage cups

I keep making them and collecting them

Now that I draw zentsngles

It has becomes a daily affair

Something in the repetition 

Is soothing, reassuring 

It’s all about art

And art is uplifting

And there is the element of surprise

My work is never planned ahead 

So it is that my zentangles 

Have tangled me in their web

I enjoy my conversations with them

“Oh, yes that’s exactly how I feel”

“That is a great point!”

“Couldn’t have said it better myself!”

These conversations bring me joy

Expand my knowledge

Touch my soul

To talk to an artist is healing

Because art is healing

And helps us connect 

“Art is a window to the spiritual world”

We need to connect to the spiritual world

Draw on its power

But uplifted by it 

Be enveloped in its warmth 

“We are spiritual beings having a human experience”

Thank you to my fellow artist for accompanying me

On my path of exploring my creativity

I’m grateful for their input

I would talk to an artist anytime, anywhere

Native spirituality

Tell me about native spirituality I asked

It’s all about living in harmony with each other, animals and plants and the natural world 

We are all one family

Here, we grow spiritually by being kind, serving others and working for peace and unity 

In the other worlds of God we continue to grow 

Life and death are on the same continuum 

The spirit is constant in both

We need to thank the creator for his bounties

We need to keep our oceans and rivers clean

We need to hunt sustainably 

And we need to heal from the wrongs done to us in the past

Art can play an important role in this healing

Art can bring people together and increase understanding 

Art can build a bridge between cultures

These are all aspects of living spiritually

“Creativity is free play with no rules”

This speaks to me

This frees me to be who I am

To create what I want

Not to judge myself or my work

Creating should be fun, not a burden

Creating should bring us joy

Rules create restrictions

And creativity needs freedom 

When we create

There is no right or wrong

What we create is a reflection of who we are

Others may not understand it 

Or may be critical of it

But that should not discourage us

What we create is valuable at all times

Sometimes the finished work may not be what we expected

Sometimes we learn a lesson we can apply later

But continuing to create is the way to success

Success in sharing our voice

Success in being a conduit for the forces of the universe

So, let’s play

Let’s create and be joyful 

Let’s not worry about rules

As they say, rules are made to be broken

There would be no innovation

If everyone kept doing the same thing

The gift of time

When you overcome an illness

There is a sense that it was meant to be

That you are meant to be here still

And continue this physical existence a little longer

When you overcome an illness

You don’t take life for granted

You know that your time on this earth is limited

And you need to use it wisely 

There is nothing wrong with our existence after this life

As the spirit’s life is never ending

But we are here for a purpose

And need to use our talents and abilities

In the service of our community 

When you overcome an illness

Life becomes more precious

Time becomes more valuable

Projects becomes more urgent 

Family becomes more important

And you become grateful for the gift of time

Sometimes it’s good to have no plans

Sit and let your thoughts play in the playground of your mind

No place to be

No appointments to keep

Nothing to cross off your to-do list

Just sit and stare

Or in my case, write 

With with no agenda or plan

Write as a kind of meditation

With no goal in mind

These times are rare but essential

Our souls need maintenance too

If we fill up every hour of our day

We may burn out 

Or feel really tired

We need time to focus on positive thoughts

To look for beauty in nature or art

Perhaps create something just because

Take a break from the rat-race of life and

Breathe deeply

And after a while, when we are ready

Tackle the things that need to be done

I just realized I’ve been posting poems on this blog for ten years. How the time flies. I’m grateful to have discovered the gift of writing at this point in my life. It centres me, it nourishes me, it helps me process my thoughts and feelings, and I hope my writings bring joy to those who read them. It is important for all of us to identify what we are passionate about and peruse that and if that passion is in a creative field, even better. The arts are expressions of our souls and as such they will touch the souls of others. I wish you a wonderful year and I hope you will pursue your passion as well.
