O Canada

O Canada

My home after my homeland

O Canada

Where I spread my wings

O Canada

Our refuge during frightening times

O Canada

Freedom, your gift to us

When people ask me where I’m from

I always say Iran

That bond is secure

And will be for the years to come

But you became a safe haven for us

A place where we could live and thrive

O Canada

You are not perfect

No country is

You mistreated the natives of this land

You are warm hearted and welcoming

But issues of race and justice remain

O Canada

You need time to grow and become more mature

You’ll need all your inhabitants for this growth
O Canada

A beacon of hope in this world of ours

O Canada

Where many nationalities reside side by side

I belong

We feel the need to belong

To be accepted

To be similar to those around us

To fit in

But what if we embrace otherness

Accept the uniqueness of our experiences

The difference in the colour of our skin

Or the country we come from

Realizing that underneath

All these seeming differences

We are one

We all come from Africa

The devisions we have created

Are manmade

Differences can be good if we accept them

And are aware of the underlying oneness

I belong to the human family

And my experiences in life

Make me the unique human being that I am

And that uniqueness

That otherness

Is on the surface

Deep inside we are all one

And when I understand that

I will feel like I belong

No matter where I am

Beauty

white flower

What is beauty?
Beauty is in being authentic
Being truthful with ourselves and with others
Being sincere in our daily interactions

What is beauty?
It’s all the colors of the rainbow
It’s the diversity we see

What is beauty?
Beauty is joy
It’s a radiant smile

What’s beauty?
It’s a compassionate heart

Real beauty is invisible to the eye

Collage of me

Collage:
Different colors , textures, and shapes
Put together in harmony to create beauty

My life is a collage of sorts
Various countries, languages
And cultures have shaped me

The base of this collage is created
With earth tones
Colors that stand for the desert, the valley and
The bare mountains of Shiraz
The city of poets, roses and nightingales
The city I come from

Over the earth tones are other colors
That represent the rest of my life
The countries I’ve lived in
The languages I speak
And the different cultures that have influenced me

And though these parts seem distinct and disparate at times
They create whole that is the collage of me
A collage in which
Eastern and Western culture are intertwined
Its hallmark is diversity
Its message, love

A new race of men

There is a new group of people in the world
Who are born in one country and grow up in another
And perhaps move from that country too
To study or work somewhere else
What should they call themselves?
How should they define themselves?

I know a gentleman from Lebanese roots
Who group up in Nicaragua
He came to Montreal to study and stayed
Now, he speaks English with a Spanish accent
His wife is French Canadian
So the mix of cultures and languages goes on

We were at a dinner with two other couples
For none of whom English was the mother tongue
But that’s how we communicated all night
What we have in common, living in Montreal

My children have Dutch and Persian heritage
But have grown up in Canada
They are not identifiable as Persian or Dutch
But appreciate where their parents come from

I asked a Japanese man who lives in the United States
When he moved there
He said he’s third generation Japanese American
Ooops! What a mistake

Cases like this will only increase
As we continue to live our lives
Already, where are you from
Is not an easy answer for some

How wonderful that we’ll have to get to know people
By focusing on their qualities not their birth place
The gentleman with an Arabic name and a Spanish accent
Was the inspiration for this poem

long live diverstiy

Don’t have to convince you if you don’t agree
Don’t have to move you if you don’t want to be moved

I’m happy to be who I am, you’re happy to be who you are

Don’t need to defend my point of view
Don’t have to be right all the time
No need for everyone to agree always
Long live diversity of opinion and thought

It’s in my blood!

Traveling is in my blood!
Living in different countries is in my blood!
Movement is in my blood!
Restlessness is in my blood!

Curiosity is in my blood!
A thirst for the knowledge of the other is in my blood!
More of the same does not interest me!
Tradition, I respect
But it can’t chain me

When I travel
I marvel at the different colors that I see
The different ways of doing things
And yet I know that deep down where it counts
We are all the same
With the same hopes and aspirations
With the same smiles and tears
With the same challenges!

So, yes, I crave diveristy
But I know that this diversity
Is like the beautiful costumes that we wear
Underneath, our reality is the same

New Beginnings…

To new beginnings
New associations
Renewed camaraderie
Building on what has been!

Each day brings new opportunities
To leave the past behind
To strengthen bonds
To build new ones!

To family unity
To being supportive
To building together
What can’t be built alone!

To being open-minded
Seeing only the good
Revising old assumptions
Being a student in the school of life!

To rediscovering one’s culture
celebrating all that’s good
Bringing people together
No matter from what clime!

A few of my favourite things…

My favourite things tend to be simple and free
A walk by the water in the spring sun
With a friend or a loved one
Writing my poems in a lovely place
Listening to music of all kinds
Conversations over tea
Spending time in nature
Reading

Aside from these things
What I love to do is to get to know
People of various cultures and travel

Some of this can be done right were I live
The world has come here
Not need to go searching

But traveling is fun and enlightening as well
Being outside one’s comfort zone
Being exposed to the old and new
Seeing things from another point of view!

Our world, so colourful and diverse
So many places one can go
So many cultures to get to know

Traveling does require means
But it doesn’t have to be impossibly expensive

This will be part of my dream in years to come
Traveling, meeting people and delving into
Other cultures and ways of thought

One more thing on my list
Is laughing out loud
At a joke
A gesture
A story
Or anything at all!

Laughter relaxing
Laughter Devine
This does not cost a thing
Only good company
Someone witty and bright

I’m sure I have other favourite things
But for now, I’ll keep it to this list!

Dreaming…

If Canada were situated in the tropics
There would be no room to stand
The immigration waiting list would be a mile long
Not to mention all the visitors swarming our land

But wouldn’t it be lovely
To move this wonderful place
To warmer climes

The peace, the tranquility
The courtesy, the humility
The diversity and richness
The striving for excellence
All of this in a sunny spot
Where winter would not make
Many of us hibernate for months

Yes, I know
We can’t have it all
But I can dream, can’t I?
