In common

image

People are fascinating
We are all so different and yet the same
We have similar needs
But fulfill them in different ways
In the end, we all want to be loved and valued
We hope to contribute somehow to the society we live in
We want to be seen and heard
We want to have true friends in our lives
We want to learn and discover and fulfill our potential
These needs transcend Nationality, race and culture
These needs are human needs
Common to us all

Best Recipe

Paper,color and texture
Grids
Nets
And patterns
Opacity
Luminosity
And beauty
Needle, thread
Glue
And lots of love

Combine them
With enthusiasm
A radiant smile
encouraging words
And music, divine

Put them in a place
Surrounded by art
Masterfully made
Beautifully hung

Add eager participants
Creative souls
Eager to try

Mix and stir
And what you will have

Storm

IMG_4311

There are times in our lives
That the intensity of our emotions
Overwhelms us
We feel deeply
We yearn passionately
We hurt intensely
We miss others badly

These powerful emotions
Sometimes bring us to our knees
We want to get out of the whirlwind
But we can’t
We feel the same feeling over and over
And it hurts

And at the same time
These are times that we feel most alive

The waves created by our emotions
Keep crashing against the cliff of our spirit
But in the end
Our spirit makes it through
It survives another storm
And arrives at a place of calm

Painful experiences lead to beautiful insight
A painful birth to a most beautiful child

In our world pain and beauty are intertwined

Beauty can be painful
Can wrench the heart
Beauty can cause us pain and trauma

Beauty and pain are intertwined

My thoughts

IMG_7178

There is a thought that keeps going round and round
In my head
I feel like I’m caught in a whirlwind

It’s a battle of sorts
That I have with myself
I try to make sense of things
But don’t manage

Is it a matter of letting go?
Or is it something to hold on to?
Am I being fair to others and myself?
What do I need to be doing different?

I’ve been over all these thoughts in my head
And I don’t find any answers
Some issues are simpler than others
And this one is most circuitous

Shades of grey

DSC00599

Wouldn’t if be easier if life
Were black and white
Something was either right or wrong
But life’s not like that
And things come in all shades of grey

And what is one to do
How is one to behave?
Does is depend on the shade of grey?
Or is grey moving into the territory of black
And we kid our selves?

The life’s questions are many
And the answers sometimes are illusive
Perhaps the passage of time
Will shed some light
On the dark recesses of life

Beauty

white flower

What is beauty?
Beauty is in being authentic
Being truthful with ourselves and with others
Being sincere in our daily interactions

What is beauty?
It’s all the colors of the rainbow
It’s the diversity we see

What is beauty?
Beauty is joy
It’s a radiant smile

What’s beauty?
It’s a compassionate heart

Real beauty is invisible to the eye

Dancing street

image
Dancing street is
Where I lived at in Shiraz

It was actually called
Ghasr’u’dast
The palace in the meadow
But we called it Raghs’u’dasht
The dancing street
As a tribute to the multitude
Of potholes that made us dance

It was a long narrow street
That led out of Shiraz
To the tiny town called Ghasr’u’dasht

There, at the end of a
Dead-end street
Called Zargary, the Goldsmith
My father built a house
Which seemed like a palace to me

It had many rooms
And a huge back yard
A large garage
And a multi-coloured gate
At the front

We had many dinner parties
And house-guests
My mother made meals fit
For a king
And we entertained a lot

We had guests from Tehran
The US and Africa
Some were relatives
Some were friends
And some were Baha’is from abroad

I remember walking and singing
In the grassy area of the back yard

And playing with the weeping willows
As I sang songs

This was my childhood home
Until we left Iran
It was off the dancing street
Outside Shiraz

What we need

image

I got a surprise phone call
It cheered my heart
I heard from a dear friend
It consoled my soul
Connection
What we seek and what we need
Comradery
What we want
Our needs are not so complicated
After all
We don’t need fancy things
Or amazing experiences to feel happy
We need to have people in our Iives
Who understand us and are there for us
What we need is to feel loved

Secrets

IMG_2549

Differences matter not
What brings us together is what we have in common
And what we have in common
May not be very apparent or easy to discern

What attracts us to another can’t always be put into words or reasoned out
What draws us close to another person is not always obvious

But perhaps not everything needs to be figured out logically
Maybe the realm of emotions can have its own secrets
