A year like no other

Another season comes to a close

Another year wraps up

It was a year with many challenges

We were caught off guard all over the world

It was a year that showed us the world is one country

And that we are interdependent

It was a year of sorrow and heartache

A year of the triumph of science

A year that showed us our world has many ailments and is need of a competent physician

A year that told us that the world has grown weary and is in need of rejuvenation

Our responsibilities are grave

We can’t wait for others

We must act

We must do our share to heal this ailing world of ours

Healing will come through love and the acknowledgment of our oneness

Healing will require compassion and justice

The road to recovery is long and arduous

But we are on that road and we will arrive one day

The writer’s canvas

D5846462-2A7F-40EE-A871-26988B15680C

“A painter paints pictures on canvas

Musicians paint their pictures on silence”

A writer paints her picture on the tablet of the readers’s heart

Words are the paint

Some vibrant

Some subdued

Words are the paint

Sometimes splashed across the page in rage

Sometimes applied with gentleness

Words are the paint

They create a masterpiece

From ordinary subjects

Words are the paint

The colours endless

Words are the paint

The pictures they paint bubble up

From the soul of the writer and

Mesmerize the observer

Words are the paint

The paining a reflection of the spirit of the writer

My hopes for the spring

image

The spring is returning

The snow is melting

The sun is shining

The birds are singing their song

Nature revives and

Birds return from their trips to warmer climes

I hope the ice of prejudice in our hears melts too

And we see each other as brothers and sisters

I hope the colour of our skin is seen a source of diversity

Not of separation and superiority

I hope we focus on the wellbeing of others, not just our own

I hope our characters are beautified like the flowers that will bloom

I hope we educate our children morally as well as scientifically

I hope women are treated as equals with dignity and respect

I hope the darkness of prejudice, envy and greed

Will give way to the light of the dawn

I hope flowers of justice, equality and trustworthiness will bloom

All I can do is to do may share, to play my part

To set lofty goals and serve my community

All I can do is to refine my character

To be diligent and conscientious

All I can do is practice moderation

Show respect and  be compassionate

This is all I can do

This is all we can do

To beautify the world

As this spring arrives

An ocean of snow

AB925D9A-BBE3-40BA-BF30-E7CBDB6DFF37

It’s an ocean of snow

Ripples in the snow are like gentle waves

And amid this ocean of snow

Are standing you and I

Seemingly apart

Seemingly drowning in the white snowy landscape

But we are still standing tall

We have not given up

We are defying the odds

We have faith that spring will return

That the snow will melt

And that we will start our lives over again

Covid 2

IMG_0353

Covid, covid, you’ve been with us for a year now

That’s a long time

That’s twelve months, 365 days, actually more

Are we used to you?

Somewhat

People can get used to the strangest of things

People can survive years in captivity

What we have with you is nothing like that

Yet we complain

We ask, where did our freedom go?

Where did our fun disappear to?

Why can’t we socialize like we used to?

We still have a lot of freedom though

We can zoom from morning till noon

iChat in the afternoon

Send messages on WhatsApp all day long

We can socialize all we want

Yes, it’s different now

But just imagine what it would be like

If we didn’t have the web?

The garden

Where should I go for inspiration but to the Beloved?

Where should I turn my face to but to the beauty of the beloved?

Nowhere else is worthy is attention

Nowhere else will delight my heart

When there is a most perfect garden with dizzyingly fragrant flowers

A feast for the eyes and a balm for the soul

Why should I roam in the desert one minute longer?

The map has been drawn

The way has been shown

All that is left is to walk on the path

That leads me to the Beloved

My reading chair

In my reading corner

In my bedroom

Next to the window

Where the sun pours in, in the mornings

My reading chair

A simple Ikea chair

With a footstool

Usually covered with books

Where I do a lot of reading and writing

My reading chair

My oasis

My place of calm

Where I inhale the fragrance

Of other people’s thoughts and feelings

My reading chair

For the last twenty years

And for years to come

Hopefully

Reflections

IMG_3847

I just realized I’ve been posting poems on this blog for ten years. How the time flies. I’m grateful to have discovered the gift of writing at this point in my life. It centres me, it nourishes me, it helps me process my thoughts and feelings, and I hope my writings bring joy to those who read them. It is important for all of us to identify what we are passionate about and peruse that and if that passion is in a creative field, even better. The arts are expressions of our souls and as such they will touch the souls of others. I wish you a wonderful year and I hope you will pursue your passion as well.
