Morning thoughts

In the quiet of the morning

No sounds is heard but the faint tick tock of the clock on the wall

It’s still dark outside

It’s me and a cup of Earl Grey tea in my red mug

And dried fruit in the beautiful blue Japanese bowl we got as a gift years ago

Both are on the silver tray my mother brought from Bosnia when she was there

This tray has designs on it and reminds me of Persian copper trays

And their beautiful engravings

I feel content

But my mind is also busy with all the projects I have on the go

My volunteer work for the Baha’i community

My work for the Persian Art and Culture magazine

Both of which come with monthly deadlines

My writing and publishing

The work of running a house

And now, back to teaching Daphne English

After a year that I didn’t do so due to my treatments

My to-do list is always full

I cross a few items off and add a few more

But that’s life

And life needs to be full of worthwhile activities

I’m grateful and content

As I finish writing, I hear the clock go tick tock, tick tock

My tea cup

My tea cup is white

And the word tea is written on it

Just in case I forget what it’s for

It has a rounded bottom which is pleasant to hold

Especially to warm my fingers on days that are cold

Many times when I pick up this tea cup

I’m transported to my youth in Vancouver

I taught English and this cup was the one

That sat on my desk during those years

I taught immigrants

I taught international students

And all the while my tea cup kept me company

Ready for when it was needed

This tea cup is around thirty years old

It has been with me in the various countries and cities

I have lived in

It has witnessed many things

It is one of the constants in all the changes in my life

Let’s have some tea!

Tea time!

What is it about drinking tea that is so soothing?
Especially when drunk in the company of a friend?
Is it the aroma of a lovely tea chosen with care?
Is it the warmth of tea felt all inside as one drinks it?
Is it the conversation that one can’t rush?
All of the above perhaps and much more!

Tea brings people together in a beautiful way
It’s a binding agent!
It communicates love!
It says I have time to make you some tea and
Sit and drink it with you as we chat!
It means I’m giving you attention
I’m happy to serve you

For all these things, offering someone tea
Is one of the loveliest things one can do!

Also, this tradition runs in my veins as a Persian girl
Offering tea, one of the first things one does when friends come over
It’s a warm welcome, a warm hug in liquid form!
