Humility is needed

The woman who is sitting across you

Full of confidence

At the top of her game

May have had very difficult experiences

She may have been seriously ill

Lost hope and almost lost faith

Challenges in life can do that to us

The woman who is smiling all the time

Fresh as sunshine

Has scars of her own

And difficulties she cannot share in a casual conversation

It seems it’s better to assume that

Everyone has been hurt

Everyone has suffered

Whether we know it or not

We need to be gentle with each other

Supportive of one another

And when the time arrives

Hold that someone’s hand

Listen to their story

And give them the opportunity to be heard

Not religious

54BC80BB-590B-4272-82D6-AE3B9404C51B

He told me he is not religious

But he believes any good thing you do for others comes back to you

Karma, I guess

I thought to myself

I think that’s exactly what being religious is about

Doing good deeds and helping other without wanting a reward

Otherwise, what good comes of being religious?

If religion does not make you a better person

If religion does not teach you to help others

If religion does not tell you about the importance of selflessness

What good is religion?

If you call yourself something but you do something else

You are an imposter

You are just pretending

It doesn’t do you or others any good

If you call yourself a peacock

But act like a chicken

Then, you are a chicken

It’s not about what you call yourself

It’s about how you live your life

Happiness

What brings us happiness?

Certainly not just material things

Because there are many unhappy rich people

To be happy we have other need that need the be met

Need for companionship and friendship

Need for purpose in our lives

A passion or an interest

And ironically happiness comes to us

When we make others happy

It’s not just about us

We derive happiness from helping others

And being useful in society

In a way our happiness depends on the happiness of our neighbor

Stones

We live more isolated
More orderly lives
Various things separating us
From one another

Bigger homes
Longer distances to work
Less time for family and friends
Valuing independence
Fear of rejection
Old wounds of the past

The distances created between us
Make our communities feel colder
More organized perhaps
Less chaotic
But Loneliness is rampant

Instead of talking to friends
We call hot-lines designed
To help us cope

When we need help
We are weary of asking our
Neighbour for a hand

When we stand in line
We look down at our phones
Instead of at each other

Separation is cold, lonely and lifeless

Being more connected may be
More chaotic
Louder
Less comfortable at times

But it’s colourful
More lively
More cozy
More kind

And a helping hand is always nearby
