A woman’s voice

A meeting is in progress over Zoom

University professors and administrators at work

I hear the confident voice of a woman

Who seems to be chairing the meeting

The cadence of her voice

It’s tone

The words she uses

All tell of her competence

And her assurance that she is being heard

Because she has ideas that are important to share

I hear men’s voices too

But hers is dominant

They are obviously solving problems and making plans

How wonderful to see women in science

In the highest echelons

Voicing their opinions

Leading the charge

This is how it should be in all areas

This is the sign of things to come

Masks and Omicron

CD96C5BD-9B04-4989-B69A-92D2AF1A605D
I’ve graduated from wearing cloth masks to boring surgical masks

The blue ones still remind me of hospitals

So, I have the black version

They are disposable but can be worn more than once

No washing necessary as before but

I still leave the form of my lipsticked lips inside them

The down side of masks is that it’s hard to hear others talk

It’s hard to to be heard

My smile can’t be seen

They are inconvenient, but

Masks are essential during these times

The N95 variety preferably

Omicron is not playing games

It definitely means business

These years will be remembered as masked years

A few weeks turned into a few months, and now a few years

If there were more unity among us

Life would have been simpler

But some don’t see it that way

They don’t want to be told what to do

They don’t want to conform

They question science

They don’t trust the experts

Countries need to cooperate too

We are not isolated entities anymore

What happens in one country will affect the other ones

Unless we come together and be united in our thoughts

Unless we are mindful of the influence of our actions on others

We will be wearing masks for a while longer

This is our reality right now

What we do affects the outcome

A year like no other

Another season comes to a close

Another year wraps up

It was a year with many challenges

We were caught off guard all over the world

It was a year that showed us the world is one country

And that we are interdependent

It was a year of sorrow and heartache

A year of the triumph of science

A year that showed us our world has many ailments and is need of a competent physician

A year that told us that the world has grown weary and is in need of rejuvenation

Our responsibilities are grave

We can’t wait for others

We must act

We must do our share to heal this ailing world of ours

Healing will come through love and the acknowledgment of our oneness

Healing will require compassion and justice

The road to recovery is long and arduous

But we are on that road and we will arrive one day
